Cutting Out Negativity on Your Path to Peak Performance

When you’re on your path to peak performance, you’re going to encounter people who live on a completely different “frequency” than you. People who think negatively—about themselves, others, or even the world at large. What you’ll notice is that this negativity has a way of sticking to you, dragging you down and clouding your mindset. If you’re serious about reaching peak performance, you don’t have the time or energy for these people. You need to cut them off—directly and without hesitation.

The closer these people are to you, the harder this is to do. Sometimes, you’ll need to make the tough decision to sever ties with those who no longer add value to your life (like old friends who are stuck in their negative cycles and hold no relevance to your current or future ambitions). In other cases, you’ll need to learn how to mentally distance yourself while still handling your responsibilities. When it’s a close family member or someone you live with who’s dragging you down with their toxic worldview, it’s important to recognize that they’re living in a different reality from you. You can spend endless energy trying to explain what you’re doing or even trying to change their mindset—but it’s a waste of time.

The truth is, the group of people striving for peak performance is incredibly small. Feeling “different” or “misunderstood” is a sign you’re on the right track. Take it as a compliment. You’re doing something that they could have done too, but they didn’t have the guts to. Their negativity is often a reflection of their own insecurities and envy—because deep down, they know they’re not willing to make the sacrifices you are.

Stay mentally strong. Don’t let anyone throw you off your game, especially people who haven’t achieved what you’re aiming for. They have no right to speak on your journey. Keep your focus sharp, your goals front and center, and let nothing—nothing—stop you from becoming the best version of yourself.
